A HISTORY OF THE WORLD’S MOTORCYCLES
WRITTEN BY RICHARD HOUGH AND L.J.K. SETRIGHT

REVISED EDITION1973

This book provides a briskly-recounted history of the powered two-wheeler, from the pioneer products of Parkyns and Holden in Britain, Copeland and Pennington in the USA, the Werner brothers and the Count de Dion in France, and others. Every stage of development is covered from the twist-grip control of the Daimler of the 1880s, through the springing and electrical developments of the pre-World War I Indians, the transmission revolutions wrought by men such as Bradshaw in the 1920s, to the Italian and German refinements of the 1930s and 1950s, and the Japanese technical conquests of the 1960s. Individual machines of historical note are singled out and examined, and on the racing scene some of the most exciting events, and some of the more colourful and successful personalities, are sketched in as a background to the account of progress and development in the technical field.
