Gilbert de Rudder (“GRIZZLY”) was one of the most well known motorsport celebrities in Belgium. Born in 1911, he began to take part in races in 1932. In the Grand Prix of Floreffe he ended third and first senior rider, behind Pol Demeuter and Noir. After this result he became a factory rider for Sarolea. 1936 was his best year with several victories, f.i. the French Grand Prix and the Belgian 500 cc title. In 1938 he won 10 races in the moto cross.
After the Second World War he became a garage owner and he sold Sarolea as well as Velocette motorcycles.
On July 1st 1946 he drove the best race of his life in Terkamerenbos. Then came the race of Het Zoute in Knokke. During the training session on July 13th he crashed against a tree. Three days later he died of his injuries.
