Ce livre aurait pu s’intituler Les Moteurs de la Civilisation, dans la mesure où l’histoire américaine de ces cent dernières années se confond avec celle du Moteur. Depuis la machine à vapeur et la dynamo électrique, jusqu’au moteur à explosion et au réacteur, la recherche de puissance mécanique a toujours été un facteur primordial de la Révolution Industrielle.
