‘THE CONTINENTAL CIRCUS’ – LES CHAMPIONS BELGES – DE BELGISCHE KAMPIOENEN 1947-1961
WRITTEN BY JAN KERCKHOF
August Goffin was our most glorious road racing driver ever, winning no fewer than 14 National Championship titles between 1938 and 1955. He took part in more than 400 speed races, at home and mainly abroad. His name appears on the palmares of all major circuits in Europe (and even in Brazil). After his racing career, Goffin founded the first national team to rescue the road racing competition in Belgium, which had reached an impasse. This resulted in Raymond Bogaerdt, who became his worthy successor as a seven-time champion.
This book is also a tribute to August Goffin’s other Belgian champions and rivals in the highest classes (350 & 500cc) of road racing competition, such as Roger Laurent, Léon Martin, Ergé and Firmin Dauwe. Our sidecar heroes are also not forgotten, especially the unsurpassed Frans Vanderschrick, Juliën Deronne, Marcel Masuy and versatile champion Pierrot Ver Vroegen.
There is also a chapter about the private racers, the street circuits and the production racing machines of this time.
The book contains a unique collection of some 250 original and mostly never before published black and white photos, dozens of colour images and some personal testimonials from the only three living heroes from this glorious and very special period in motorcycle racing history.
