SCHICKEL MOTORCYCLE – THE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE SCHICKEL MOTORCYCLE 1911-1924
GESCHREVEN DOOR KEN ANDERSON

HET BOEK IS GESIGNEERD DOOR DE SCHRIJVER

Heel interessant boek over de geschiedenis van de Schickel motorfiets met veel originele foto’s.

In February of 1911 a revolutionary motorcycle, introduced by a newcomer to the transportation industry, was the highlight of the “Chicago Motorcycle Show”. It included a number of firsts for the motorcycle industry including the first two-cycle built in America, the first twist grip transmission control, the first rotating magneto spark advance and the first driveshaft-flywheel-crankshaft combination made from a single forging. Its patented designs included a hinged rear mudguard, a unique two-cycle engine design, a spring fork front wheel suspension system and an integral one piece cast aluminum frame and gas tank combination. Other innovations were its unusual compression release system and a novel tool storage compartment within the gas tank.
The Schickel Motor Company of Stamford, Ct. was an early leader in motorcycle technology and an important part of American transportation history. This book highlights the inventive genius of the company founder and gives a rare insight into the operation of an early motorcycle manufacturer. Included among the 90 pictures are 38 original Schickel Motor Co. photographs of the factory, parts and the motorcycle models from 1911 to 1924. The letter writers, who give an interesting insight into the motorcycle industry of the day include Frank Schwinn of the Excelsior Motor Co., P.T. Bailey of the Ace Motorcycle Co. and F.J. Weschler of the Indian Motorcycle Co. Among the legal documents are royalty and license fee agreements by both the Indian Motorcycle Co. and the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Co. for their infringement on Schickel Patents.
The author is the founder’s grandson and is fortunate to have access to the world’s largest collection of Schickel Motorcycles, parts, photos, brochures, information and memorabilia. The extent of the historical, technical and financial information included in this narrative make it one of the most complete histories written about an early American motorcycle company and an important addition to the library of motorcycle collectors and transportation historians
