Het idee van het zijspan stamt uit 1893, zodat de fietser in staat was een passagier mee te nemen. Omdat de motorfietsen steeds algemener werden in het begin van de twintigste eeuw, werd het design van het zijspan steeds beter, het was comfortabeler dan een duozit.
